Helmcken House is located right next door to the Royal British Columbia Museum and Mungo Martin House and adjacent to Thunderbird Park. Helmcken House is one of the oldest surviving homes in British Columbia. Dr. John Sebastian Helmecken owned the house from 1852 until his death in 1920.
John Sebastion Helmcken was born in 1824 in London, England. He became a doctor in 1824. In 1850 he journeyed six months aboard the Norman Morison to the new British Colony on Vancouver Island, arriving at Victoria to work as the Hudson's Bay Company's surgeon and physician.
Helmcken House is complete with period objects owned by the Helmcken family. There are items such as a sewing machine, furniture, medical supplies and instruments, and Victorian period objects.
One of the most intriguing
collections you'll be able to examine at Helmcken House is the good doctor's
original 19th century medical kit.
Available are guided and self-guided tours!
Hours from May to September are 10 am-5 pm daily. From October to December, and February to April: noon to 4 pm. The house is closed all of January. The grounds are always accessible.
