Victoria's Chinatown is characteristic of other Canadian Chinatowns. The Gate of Harmonious Interest was built as a way of preserving and recreating a historic past and also as a monument to the Chinese heritage in Victoria.
The Gate of Harmonious Interest is also a symbolic entrance to Chinatowna and a special attraction. Located at Fisgard and Douglas Street, the gate, which was named by Marti Wright, commemorated the co-operation of the entire community of Victoria to preserve the Chinatown heritage for the interest of all. The gate was officially dedicated on November 15, 1981.
