The Victoria Bug Zoo
We decided to be a tourist-in-our-own-town last weekend, and followed up on an interesting suggestion. The Victoria Bug Zoo!
Located on Wharf Street in downtown Victoria, it is across the street from the Victoria Inner Harbour and close to all food and beverage facilities. The entrance is distinguished by the artistically designed signage overhead the street entrance.
Once inside, you enter into the gift shop and admission area which is filled with bug hand-puppets (some made out of corduroy), little critter toys of all sizes and some lovely flavoured honey jars.
After making payment, we were directed into the "Viewing Gallery". We were informed that there were guided tours on-going and that we could jump in to listen. Our guide was just starting his tour from the beginning, and we were offered the opportunity to hold many of the creatures (big and small). Our guide took us from bug case to bug case, opening each one and bringing out the best and the brightest of its cohorts.
Our tour guide was very well-read and informed on all aspects of the bugs that were on display and was also quick to point out the proper care and handling techniques of each bug.
Highly recommended for young and old, tourists or residents. The Victoria Bug Zoo is an educational experience as well as a "thrill" for those who are adventurous enough to accept the "handling" opportunities presented. YIKES!!!
